1457640256 EXAMINATION OF FORMAL PROPERTIES OF WOMEN’S SHALWAR OF DENIZLI-BEYLERLI

Abstract
Our traditional clothings are integral parts of our culture. They have a special place in passing on our culture to next generations. Changes in technology, innovations in textile industry and mass production caused these clothes to extinct. People’s ways of dressing inform us about the traditions, economic conditions and lifestyle of their region. It is possible to preserve our culture by keeping cultural values alive. For this purpose, our traditional clothing should be recorded to prevent extinction. Within the scope of the research, Denizli City Çardak Providence Beylerli Town women’s shalwar were examined. In the direction of observation receipts including six woman shalwar and with the use of observation and negotiation techniques; they were investigated in terms of material, colour, form, cutting, sewing and size properties. When the fabric properties of salwar were considered, printed fabric was mostly used. Apart from that, jersey and flannel are also found to be used. Printed fabric is used almost everywhere in the town. Printed shalwars are worn during village strolling, in the field and on the street. Shalwars made up of jersey are generally used while working in the farm or handling of the cattle. Jersey is preferred since it does not show dirt easily and since it is easier to wash. Besides, flannel is preferred by elders since it keeps warm. Some of them use it as underpants. When the mold properties of shalwar are considered, it is seen that they do not utilise mold system. It is noticed that shalwars are cut in the way that will provide convenience for their work. Also, it is observed that they have mostly rectangular cuts and that crotch pieces are added between them. The length of the shalwar and the width of its cuffs resemble each other. Placing pocket in shalwar emerged as a necessity. In the course of time, pockets became a part of shalwar in order for people to put their keys and phones. It is indicated that the use of elasticated cuffs varies by person and by the area of use. The cuffs of the shalwars which are used while working in the field or handling of cattle can be pulled over the wrist by shirring the elastic. In this way, the tripping of the cuffs over feet is avoided. When the sewing properties of shalwars are observed, it is seen that machine stitch is used in all of them. Those who do not have a machine at home have their relatives living in the town sew for them. Since shalwars are made of printed fabric, it is concluded that they do not have adornment properties.
