Essays are the primary literary genres that writers or thinkers find themselves in a wider and freer space. As the subjects to be addressed or the idea to be put forward are not subject to limitation, it enriches the content of this genre. The themes in an essay may include philosophy, art, religion, culture, love, and so on. Apart from these general themes, humanistic feelings such as loneliness, fear, anger, joy and greed can be addressed in essays. As a matter of fact, these humanistic emotions have been dealt with since Montaigne, the forerunner of essay genre. Ahmet Altan also mentions and analyse human psychology in some of his essays. Altan writes about on various aspects such as hope, anxiety, lust, jealousy, courage. However, the author in some essays focuses on self-deception theme which is a psychological state and explains this state to the reader.
In this study, theme of self-deception in Ahmet Altan’s essays was investigated, and the author’s ideas in this respect were attempted to be explained.
