Ceramics, one of the most significant materials in the history of humankind, represents a deeply rooted tradition. Due to its easy formability, increased durability after firing, and hygienic nature, it has served as a fundamental material for various product groups. Among these, ceramic instruments have maintained their presence in human life since ancient times through their formal and functional qualities. In the Palaeolithic Age, early humans produced musical instruments from natural materials such as stone, bone, and wood; these objects accompanied ritual ceremonies and enhanced their symbolic meaning. With the discovery of firing clay to obtain a durable form in the Neolithic Age, humans are thought to have developed sound-producing ceramic instruments as well. Initially observed as simple percussion and wind instruments, these objects later evolved with decorative and artistic elements and have become one of the significant themes of contemporary ceramic art. For ceramic artists who wish to incorporate sound into their practice, such instruments constitute a thematic field of artistic expression and research. This study aims to evaluate the production processes of ceramic instruments from antiquity to the present, focusing on their sound-generating potential as well as the advantages and limitations of the material. The examined examples were discussed in terms of their historical, physical, and acoustic characteristics, as well as the challenges and conveniences encountered during design and production stages. As a result, it has been determined that the porous structure of ceramics contributes to the creation of warm, deep, and high-resonance sounds, functioning as a natural resonance chamber particularly in wind and percussion instruments. Furthermore, ceramic instruments are not merely products that combine engineering principles but also art objects that convey aesthetic sensibility to the performer through their visual qualities. In addition, the absence of deformations such as warping, cracking, and splitting-commonly observed in wooden instruments-highlights ceramics as a material of importance in terms of sustainability.
