1508062581 THREE ROOMS AND THREE TIMES, SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF MOVIE "THE READER"

Talking about cinematographic space undoubtedly makes it necessary to mention the signs and their configuration on the screen. Because, the configurations of the signs on the cinema screen are an important point in terms of making the movie story understandable by the viewers. Aim of this study is examining how the story of movie can be emphasized by space and the place of space in cinematographic narration. In this context, in this study, the movie call "The Reader" directed by Stephan Daldry in 2008, is analyzed in the way of semiotics and the main material of the analysis is first two seconds of the movie. The hypothesis underlying the work is "space acts as an actor in its own context in cinematographic narration". In the introduction section of the work; signs and contents / notions of semiotic method used as a research method are explained. In the following sections; the relation between cinema and semiotics has been mentioned. In the findings section; the importance of the space in cinematographic narration has been questioned with semiotic analysis of the movie "The Reader". According to the results of the research; it has been found that the three rooms shown in the first two minutes of the movie "The Reader", contain important information about events occurring at three different times in the story of movie in the context of the configuration of spatial elements. By this means, space has taken a role as an actor, as a storyteller in cinematographic narration.
