1552392985 A REVIEW ON UTKU DERVENT’S ABSTRACT GEOMETRIC WORKS

Born in İstanbul in 1967, artist-academician Utku Dervent completed Proficiency in Arts programme at
Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in 2005. The artist who worked as an academician in various universities
opened 8 solo exhibitions between the years of 2001-2008 with his abstract-geometric works created
using various techniques. The objective of the study is to analyze Utku Dervent’s abstract geometric
works in terms of form-meaning relation by building historical-stylistic relations. The sample of the study
is simply the abstract geometric works that he created using different techniques. Literature review and
historical-critical work review have been used as data collection tools in the study. The works have been
reviewed by taking Dervent’s artistic process into consideration and making comparisons between them.
They also have been analyzed by taking his artistic perspective and his own statements on the production
process into consideration. It has been concluded that the works which, it seems, are grounded on
the form-color-space relation were composed with a structural basis that is stemmed from a musical and
symmetrical rhythm, and created with an experimental manner. It has been observed that the artist put
conceptual entitles to some of his exhibitions and works, and the results obtained have been discussed in
terms of concept-composition relation. It has been reviewed that Dervent has a genuine manner of expression
and, in this regard, he is an exemplary artist who has an abstract geometric style in the 21st century
Turkish Painting Art.
